Wisdom Panel dog DNA Tests are neither designed nor intended to determine or validate whether a particular dog is purebred. Rather, the Wisdom Panel tests demonstrate how closely the DNA from an individual dog matches the DNA from dogs with known breeds in our database. Data in our reference database came from three places: 

(1) from our customers - Wisdom Panel has tested >2.5 million dogs across 50 countries, and across >1000 Banfield Pet Hospital clinics; 

(2) public datasets from peer-reviewed publications; 

(3) samples from Wisdom Panel-sponsored academic collaborations. 

  

While our dog DNA reference database is the largest in the world, it does not represent the entire picture of purebred diversity across the world (though we are trying to get there!). 

In these rare cases, a purebred dog with pedigree papers could still show trace amounts of DNA from related breeds.
